about

Hey,

I've been having more talks with people lately about the creative process and how to keep making. One of the things that seems to come up more and more is the question of whether or not something is good and/or whether or not something is valid. I definitely don't think that creators are good assessors of their own work. At least not in any ways that matter to other people. I'm left with having to just go make what I want to hear. Sometimes I listen back on things with embarrassment and other times I look back and wonder how I pulled something off. I guess it's always been like this and I'm not really telling you anything new. I'm not telling myself anything new.

One recent conversation I had that was along these lines was the old "there's nothing new" debate. Nothing you can create is truly new or by implication your own. I disagree with this, or at the very least, it doesn't feel this way. Of all the things that can happen to all the brains on the planet, this brain had these things happen to it, and this brain makes these things.

So (I'm finally getting to my point) lately I've been trying to disengage from that deliberate side of music making and attempt more improvisational song writing. Again, this isn't anything new to the world. It sucks that people feel the need to say that. Maybe I didn't need to say that... but, it's new FROM ME. And in that way, it is new. These songs are my hands and brain flying largely on autopilot and I don't often know what I'm going to say. I've been trying more and more to not edit myself. And, by adding drums, I feel that editing myself is less of an option- the meter is coming and I need to say something before it shows me tripping over myself.

If you're trying to make art just keep doing it, and then you've made art. That's all there is to it. Don't shit on yourself. I'm talking to myself as much as I'm talking to you.

Love you,

Matt
