about

View Between White Apple Blossoms Of The High Rises

I saw a hanging view of leaves and white blossoms and a green glow from the neighbor's back porch light. The light bulb was green, which is kind of weird, but it made the world outside the most alive looking place that I could imagine. The wind coming in from the lake was cool, and it smelled like water. Vaguely of fish, but not like fish. More like the smell of how water makes fish smell, if that makes sense. I could hear the music from next door. Strange and beautiful guitar sounds. Interlocking beauty and the sound of human hands conspiring to make you feel neutral and electrified. Sexual but innocent. Alive but not alive or dead. Sinister in the sense that you are part of a great power that will always win. The air is unimaginably beautiful. It feels like it is breathed in through your entire body, and it makes you cry a little.

Many years later, 4 miles away, in a 14 story building from the 1920s, there are feelings like this again. When they come, they have conditions. If you work harder, that feeling will come again. If you relax, that feeling will come again. If you smile, that feeling will come again.

At the very top of this building, you can see the lake and what's left of the city to the north. You grew up in there somewhere, and you were looking at the same buildings that you're working in now. But now, the air isn't the same, and it doesn't make you cry a little.
